Designer Thursday: We’re Crazy About Pumpkins! September 29, 2011
By Kortney Gentry

Fall is finally here and despite the fact that Florida doesn’t see much of a color change, we love a season that allows for pumpkin spice lattes and Smith-y orange foods, clothes and decorations!

When decorating for fall, what better to use than pumpkins: the most versatile little (or big) squash of all?  There is just so much you can do with this fabulous food!   After spending the morning researching cheap & easy DIY ways to decorate my St. Petersburg home , I wanted to share my findings with you.

DIY Fall Pumpkin Decor
Fall decorations don’t have to be difficult, which it is a huge relief when attempting to cram seasonal decorating into an already busy schedule.  Prepping your Tampa home for Autumn can be as easy as filling your unused fireplace with pumpkins of all shapes and sizes (above), placing candles & lantern glass on top of mini pumpkins to be used as centerpieces, carving out the insides (baking the delicious seeds of course) & creating environmentally friendly flower pots and candle holders, or paint them shiny fall colors and add a few twigs and berries for an out-of-this-world front porch decoration (below).

Fall decor
If you want to make amazing and colorful fall foods, pumpkin ingredients are also a MUST in my book.  (Did I mention baked pumpkin seeds yet?) You can easily edit your stuffed pepper recipe to read stuffed pumpkin,  and how about these adorable bite-sized pies for your fall get together? (below)  For a little extra fun, blend a slice of pie with a cup of milk (or milk replacement) & vanilla ice-cream then top it off with a pumpkin pie mini for a fantastic milkshake to share with friends. (recipe found here)

Fall Food
When it comes to pumpkins, pies and fall decor, whichever route you choose, you can’t go wrong.  The beautiful colors pared with the breezy weather and a handful of pumpkin seeds make for the perfect start to an amazing season.

What’s your favorite simple ways to decorate for fall?  Do you have a secret pumpkin pie recipe you’d like to share?

By Kortney Gentry

Tampa Bay Food & Wine Experience

The Tampa Bay Food & Wine Experience grew from the four year Tampa Bay Food & Wine Festival that once graced St. Pete Beach.  The Experience will take place September 29th- October 2nd and will feature an array of amazing local cuisine and of course…wine!  Talk about a great early start to the weekend.

The event will kick off tomorrow night with a delicious culinary dinner by one of Smith & Associates‘ favorite caterers, Mise en Place.  For $65, attendees will joy a scrumptious four-course meal paired with southern Italian wine.

Don’t let the morning hangover set in because there will be even more fun happening on Friday!  The invitation only Trade & Media Grande Experience Tasting will take place at Curtis Hixon Park in Downtown Tampa where local delicatessens will make it onto the grid from 1-4pm followed by the Mini Treats evening soiree at the Creative Loafing space in Ybor from 8-11pm.  The Mini Treats event is (surprise?) hosted by Mini Cooper and will share various delicious bite-size morsels (that according to their site will “will send you diving into the deep end of the delicious pool”) with the public for $45 per person.  It may be fall, but this is Florida and I am ready to go swimming in that pool!

Everyone will reconvene at Curtis Hixon Park for The Grande Experience Tasting Saturday at 1pm,  where you will wander around, wine glass in hand to experience the fruits of some of the world’s greatest wine makers.  You will also have the change to explore each restaurant exhibit to sample some of the finest local food and attend one of the Grande Tasting Seminars to learn how to properly please your palate at home as well!  (The Grande Experience will be $75 ahead of time & $85 at the door or get VIP entry an hour early for $100.)  After a long day, head back to Mise En Place from 6pm-9pm for the After Glow & Trade Chill where, for just $15, you will enjoy appetizers and signature drinks while relaxing with new friends and old alike.

The Experience will go out with a bang at the (much needed) Jazz & Wine Maker Brunch at the Wine Exchange in Old Hyde Park Village (pictured right courtesy of unleashyourpalate.com).  Allowing you to sleep in a bit after the weekend’s excitement, the Hyde Park Villageevent takes place from noon-3pm.  For $65, enjoy what is said to be the best brunch in town- European style creations paired with the wines of Frog’s Leap Winery.  Or step up to the Bloody Mary bar for the perfect cure to the morning after a wine filled weekend while listening to the soothing sounds of CBS Radio.

I don’t know about you but I am pretty sure I have made up my mind about this weekend’s plans and I am ready to start tomorrow!  Get out of your Tampa Bay home for the weekend and join us at the Tampa Bay Food & Wine Experience!  For more information or to purchase event tickets in advance, visit their website at http://www.unleashyourpalate.com/2011/ Are you coming or what?

History Appreciation: The Tampa Theatre September 26, 2011
By Kortney Gentry

I cannot walk through downtown Tampa without taking pictures of the ever so amazing Tampa Theatre. (literally…EVERY time)  As I look at the brick walls and well lit vintage sign, I can’t help but Tampa Theatrerevert back to my younger ways of make-believe and pretend it is the 1920′s.  My hair is perfectly put together in a tight knit finger wave bob, I have my 25 cents and my husband and I are going on a date to see the silent film.  Well, I declare!

So, when I  come back to reality and realize it is 2011, we are walking to Pizza Fusion in the Skypoint building, and I am daydreaming in the middle of the street, camera in hand, tourist style, I quickly come to.  I do however continue to appreciate the beauty that one historical building can bring to an area filled with modern luxuries.

According to an article in the October 15, 1926 Tampa Tribune, Theatre architect John Eberson was quoted on how he got the magnificent idea for the design of the Tampa Theatre.  “I have been wintering in Florida for the past several years, and it is from this state that I got the atmospheric idea.  I was impressed with the colorful scenes that greeted me at Miami, Palm Beach and Tampa. Visions of Italian gardens, Spanish patios, Persian shrines and French formal gardens flashed through my mind, and at once I directed my energies to carrying out these ideas.”  And we sure are glad he carried them out.  A city is always much more fun when filled with history and beauty- just another amazing reason to appreciate our Tampa Bay home.

A few fun facts & vintage photos I found on the Tampa Theatre website:

Designer Thursday: An IKEA Throwback September 22, 2011
By Kortney Gentry

Ikea truchIKEA- World’s largest furniture retailer, designer on a budget/DIY lover’s Mecca, giant maze filled with heavenly Swedish furniture (and surprisingly or not, meatballs)…whatever it is, we love it.  And would you believe that this beast of a chain was founded by a 17 year old in 1943??  Thats right 1-7!

The letters that make up the stores well-known name are actually an acronym of the founder’s name (Ingvar Kamprad), the farm he grew up on (Elmtaryd), and his home parish (Agunnaryd, in Småland, South Sweden).  * Fun Fact: Småland is directly translated “small land” in Swedish.  Hence, why the “kiddy-land” section in many of the stores don this name.
Ikea Catalogue
In 1951, eight years after IKEA was founded, the first catalog was published (see amazing vintage cover pictured right).  Then in 1958 the very first store opened it’s doors.  There are now over 270 some odd locations open worldwide (including a Tampa location, visible from the Crosstown Expressway).  Talk about company growth!

IKEA UNICEFDecorating my St. Petersburg home is not all IKEA has done for the world.  They have partnered with several other non-profit organizations including World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) and UNICEF.  According to their website “The IKEA Group, in co-operation with UNICEF, initiates a broad community program in northern India to address the root causes of child labor. The project includes 500 villages and will benefit more than 1 million people, providing more than 80,000 children with an opportunity for an education. At, present, the project covers a range of initiatives, such as providing alternative learning centers, health and nutrition, education, empowering women and forming women’s self-help groups”

If that is not reason enough to absolutely love this place (read: go on an immediate interior design spree), then I don’t know what is.  We should all learn a lesson from them.  Looking for something to do in Tampa today?  See you at IKEA in 10…

Wonder Women Wear Stilettos: Introducing Smith Title September 20, 2011
By Kortney Gentry

When you think about a Title company, what is the first thing that comes to mind?  For me, it is fabulously dressed, beautiful ladies with the best shoes in town.  Oh yeah, and how could I forget… Lightning fast closings.  Real Talk.

While these ladies may be some of the most fabulous in Tampa Bay, they mean business (with frequent side orders of fun, of course).  The Smith & Associates Title, Inc. is an attorney-operated, full service company dedicated to providing exceptional real estate closings to sellers and purchasers throughout the state of Florida.

According to President, Angie Comas, “Our goal is to ensure that the real estate transaction proceeds flawlessly from opening to closing. This is accomplished by harmonizing our technology with traditional, time tested processing methods. In addition to our highly knowledgeable staff, we offer a level of exceptional customer services that the Smith & Associates customer has come to expect.”

Let’s meet the Smith Title girls that will be closing your next Tampa home:

Angie ComasAngi Comas, President
Angi Comas immigrated from Vietnam and landed directly in South Tampa, where she has resided since 1982.   Angi is almost a “native Tampanian” in that she attended primary schools throughout South Tampa and college at the University of South Florida. After spending three years in law school at Florida State University, she longed to come back to her South Tampa home. Although Tallahassee is a charming city, she missed driving on Bayshore Boulevard and walking around in Hyde Park Village. In 2009, Angi Comas joined Smith & Associates Title.   If Angi is not in the office, you can find her in her closet – organizing it.

Julie Simmons, CloserJulie Simmons
Julie (or Ms.  Simmons, as she occasionally likes to be called) relocated to the Tampa Bay area in 2002 from her home-town of Pensacola, to begin her career in the field of title insurance.  Julie now calls St. Petersburg home (blocks away from our Beach Drive location).   Around the office, Julie Simmons can spotted wearing a cardigan sweater and a Smith & Associates name tag – the two most important elements of her signature look.  In addition to her passion for title insurance, Ms. Simmons enjoys running, kayaking, ballroom dancing and spending time with her beloved eight year old boxer, Dirce.

Aurean WhalenAureann Whalen, Closer
At the age of fourteen, Aureann began her title insurance career by making microfilm copies for her father, a title insurance examiner, during the summer break.  Aureann’s mother is a title insurance marketing representative and so,  Aureann was destined to be in the title insurance industry. In addition to her extensive experience as a closer in South Florida and in the greater Tampa Bay area, she closed many of the sales transactions for Grand Key in South Tampa.  Aureann speaks fluent Spanish and has a penchant for all things that are sparkly – just like her personality.  When she is not working on closings for all of our agents, Aureann likes to play golf and go to the beach.

Sara Houze, Post- CloserSara Houze
Sara Houze is a post closer at Smith & Associates Title.  Although her official duties are to handle the files after the closing, Sara is also our  technology expert. Furthermore, she inspires all of us in the office with her environmental consciousness. In our efforts to become a more “green” company, Sara has taught us that almost everything can be recycled, including packaging materials, electronics and even shoes. One of Sara’s favorite pastimes is extreme-couponing – it is amazing what she can do with $100!

Whether you are looking for beautiful ladies, massive amounts of coupons, fashion tips or the most efficient closing of your life, Smith Title is who you need on your side.  Wonder women really do rock stilettos!

Have you recently purchased a Tampa, St Pete or Belleair home?  What kind of experience did you have with the Title company?

Once Upon a Time…Tampa History Tidbits September 19, 2011
By Kortney Gentry

Have you ever wondered what Tampa was then before it became what it is now?  Well, thanks to Tampa Realtor, Robert Anderson, I received a pretty awesome history lesson today & of course, I am going to share…

Clewis Estate
Once upon a time, circa 1900, Bayshore Boulevard was graced with a beautiful mansion larger than any other Tampa home of it’s time.  Situated on a large waterfront plot of land, the solid brick home boasted 8 monstrous white pillars holding up a beautiful upstairs patio fenced off with white wood while a similarly fenced terrace sat atop the home.  This beautiful landmark was the the Clewis Family Estate. (pictured above circa 1925)

AC Clewis was a Florida Pioneer and entrepreneur far ahead of his time.  In the 1890s, Clewis made way to Tampa from Tallahassee to build a rail way that would be used to transport sugar cane.  This was around the same time HB Plant came into town to build the Rail Road Hotel.

His presence and Rail Roads are not all Mr. Clewis graced South Tampa with.  He also owned Tampa Abstract Title, sat as President of Exchange National Bank which is now Bank of America and developed Myrtle Hill Cemetery.  It is in Myrtle Hill that AC Clewis as well as many of Tampa’s most prominent residents of that era are burried.

In March of 1964, the Clewis Estate (then belonging to the late George B Howell), caught fire.  The flames originated in the attic and descended, destroying the entire top floor, leaving the home with an estimated $100,000 worth of damage.  (I cannot imagine what that amount would be now!).

Rather than repairing the home, it followed Howell’s previous intent.  The land was used used for a waterfront condominium community.  Where once sat the ruins of a demolished estate, we now have the Howell Park Howell Park Condos.  (pictured right)

I absolutely love hearing about the historical aspects Tampa has in her past & would have loved even more to experience old Tampa firsthand.  What is your favorite historical monument on this side of the Bay?  If you could go back to any time period, when would it be?
